Class Overview
Welcome to my Math class! I help K-5 students build confidence in problem solving and reasoning, the "how-to" of math skills. This begins with the foundation of number sense in Kindergarten, using hands-on tools, shapes and simple measurement. As first graders, the focus becomes strategies for understanding place value, time, basic word problems, shapes and simple graphs. In second grade students expand place value (addition/subtraction within 100 & 1000), base-ten blocks, intro to arrays (organizing rows and columns of numbers like toys in a box). Next, third grader's focus begins with the foundation of multiplication and division, times tables fluency, basic fractions meaning, and bar graphs. In fourth grade, students focus on multi-digit operations like long division/multiplication, connect fractions and decimals and learn problem-solving strategies for multi-step word problems. Lastly, fifth graders prepare for middle school by learning how to multiply/divide decimals and fractions, use numerical expressions (Algebra), and coordinate graphing, (using a grid with 'X & Y axis).
Whether your child is an English learner or just needs extra support, I help create fun, encouraging lessons that meet them where they are and help them grow step by step. Take a look at the website my husband and I have created at Yourtutorteam.com.
