Teacher on Wheels was established by Hanh Nguyen, a Vietnamese-American INFJ living in Vancouver, BC. During her high school years, she volunteered as a tutor and discovered her natural ability to quickly and accurately identify a student's intellectual and emotional needs, tailor her approach to various personalities, and explain concepts from many angles in a clear, concise manner. Hanh's passion for helping struggling students has continued until this day. Her patience, dedication, and warmth make her students immediately feel at ease. With a supportive learning environment and positive rapport, any child can be motivated towards self-actualization.
Hanh made her transition from part-time tutoring to a career as a full-time tutor after 5 years of teaching elementary-aged children at private Montessori schools. The classes were small and mixed-age, equipping her with the skills to accommodate individual learning styles. Her unique tutoring methodology is based on the Montessori principles of "freedom and responsibility" and "following the child," with an emphasis on highlighting the student's strengths and educating the human potential. Inspired by person-centred therapy, Hanh uses the Rogerian ideas of empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity to establish a therapeutic relationship with her students, then motivational interviewing and operant conditioning to facilitate change. She holds a B.A. with Honours in Chemistry from Dartmouth College of the Ivy League, a Teaching Certificate from the B.C. Ministry of Education, an A.M.I. Elementary Diploma from the Montessori College of Dublin, Ireland, and has completed training in the Orton-Gillingham method for teaching structured literacy to students with dyslexia. In addition to 5+ years of classroom experience, including 1 year as a High School English Assistant in Switzerland, she also has 10+ years of tutoring experience in Math, Science, and English, including 3 years as a Writing Tutor at the Student Center for Writing and Rhetoric at Dartmouth College. Hanh is an extremely adaptable tutor as a result of her diverse experiences in teaching and living abroad.
In her spare time, Hanh loves to explore new restaurants around town, shop for vintage clothing at thrift stores, crochet while listening to podcasts, practice ballet, swing dance to live jazz music, and have lengthy discussions about personality theories, such as Myers-Briggs personality types. INFJs are known as the natural "Counselor" and constitute only 1% of the population. She also spends her summers in Montreal learning French because she enjoys expressing herself in foreign languages (German, Vietnamese). As a life-long learner herself, Hanh is currently taking courses at UBC in the pursuit of an M.Ed. in Counselling Psychology. She integrates various counselling techniques into her lessons, giving rise to the term "Therapeutic Tutoring."
Hanh and her team of dedicated tutors are eager to share their love of learning and specialized expertise with students and families in need of a helping hand.
